UTSPS Poet of the Year 2012

Dawnell H. Griffin was born and raised in Millard County, Utah. She attended the College of Southern Utah (now Southern Utah University) and Utah State University. After her marriage to Wade W. Griffin, she studied genealogy as well as Local and Family History at Brigham Young University. They are the parents of five sons, three daughters, and have numerous grandchildren. Dawnell has written and had published several family and local histories. She has also worked as a researcher and consultant for many years. Dawnell has written a number of short stories and received several awards for her poetry.

In 2010, Wade and Dawnell’s youngest son received a traumatic brain injury while long-boarding in the mountains close to Granby, Colorado. Joshua was life-flighted to a hospital in Denver in critical condition. While sitting by his bedside, Dawnell kept a journal and wrote poetry daily as a way to cope with the anxiety of watching her son. He still has no memory of any of the events that took place during those days, weeks, and months. This 2012 UTSPS Book of the Year, On Judgment Day, is a gift of healing for Joshua, for his family.
